Living Abroad? How to Keep Your US Number and Keep Getting SMS Codes
Students heading home, long business trips, extended family visits: your bank logins and two-factor codes all ride on your US number. Losing it abroad is a nightmare you can avoid.

The short version: keeping your number alive comes down to three things — keep the line active with on-time payments, drop to a cheap keep-alive plan, and set up Wi-Fi Calling while you're still in the US. Do that, and your bank codes keep arriving over any Wi-Fi connection abroad.
1. Why you can't just let the line lapse
- US prepaid lines don't wait forever: after you stop paying, the carrier typically holds your number for only a few dozen days (policies vary — check your carrier's terms), then it goes back into the pool. Getting it back is nearly impossible.
- Lose the number and you lose access to everything tied to it: bank logins, payment apps, email two-factor. Fixing that from another country is painful.
- So sort out your keep-alive plan before you leave, not after the line goes dead.
2. Three ways to keep the number alive
- Drop to a cheap plan: move your number off the expensive plan onto a basic prepaid tier. Entry-level prepaid from a major carrier starts around $15/month (confirm current pricing at purchase) — the line stays active and so does your number.
- Go dual-SIM with eSIM: convert your US number to an eSIM stored on the phone, then get a local SIM for data abroad. The US line handles verification codes; the local line handles data. Clean split, nothing missed.
- Activate and test in the US first: whether it's a physical SIM or an eSIM, activate it on US soil — place a call, receive a text, confirm the number works. Troubleshooting with no connectivity abroad is miserable.
3. The key to codes abroad: Wi-Fi Calling
- With Wi-Fi Calling enabled, texts and calls come through over any Wi-Fi connection abroad — no local signal needed, no pricey international roaming.
- The critical step: turn it on and test it while you're still in the US. iPhone and Android setup steps are in our Wi-Fi Calling guide.
- Some devices and carriers restrict Wi-Fi Calling outside the US, so verify it actually works for your setup before you fly.
4. Pre-departure checklist
- ① Activate the SIM in the US and confirm calls and texts work.
- ② Enable Wi-Fi Calling and receive one test verification code over Wi-Fi.
- ③ Note your monthly renewal date, keep a balance on the account or turn on auto-pay — never let a payment lapse.
- ④ If you switch to eSIM, the old physical SIM deactivates — save your eSIM activation details.
- ⑤ Don't port the number to a pure VoIP service just to save money — some banks refuse to send codes to VoIP numbers.
