How to Activate a USA eSIM: Step-by-Step Guide
Got a US eSIM and not sure where to start? This guide walks you through the pre-activation checks, QR code setup on iPhone and Android, manual entry when the scan fails, and how to fix a missing signal. Works for Lycamobile, T-Mobile, and AT&T.

The short version: activating an eSIM takes about five minutes if you get three things right — an eSIM-compatible, unlocked phone, stable Wi-Fi, and the QR code displayed on a second screen. The steps below apply to Lycamobile, T-Mobile, and AT&T alike.
Before You Start: Three Checks
- Your phone supports eSIM. iPhone XS and later all qualify (US iPhone 14/15/17 models are eSIM-only with no physical slot). Samsung Galaxy S20 and later and Pixel 3 and later generally qualify — but some regional variants don't. If you can find an "Add eSIM" option in your settings, you're good.
- Your phone is unlocked. A carrier-locked phone will reject another carrier's eSIM profile. Contact your original carrier to unlock it.
- You're on stable Wi-Fi. The eSIM profile downloads over the internet — airport Wi-Fi works fine. If the QR code is in your email, open it on a laptop or a second phone: one phone can't scan its own screen.
Activating on iPhone
- Go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM and choose Use QR Code.
- Scan the code from the email your seller sent, tap Continue, and follow the prompts to download the profile.
- Label the new line (e.g. "US Travel"), set it as the default for Cellular Data, and keep your home SIM for calls and texts.
If the scan won't read, tap "Enter Details Manually" at the bottom and type in the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the email — same result.
Activating on Android
- Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM, then scan or tap "Enter activation code".
- Pixel / stock Android: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Add SIM > "Download a SIM instead?"
- Once downloaded, turn the eSIM on and select it as your mobile data line.
Troubleshooting: Activated but No Signal
- Restart your phone. This fixes most "activated but no signal" cases.
- Check the line is enabled. In settings, confirm the eSIM is turned on and actually selected for cellular data.
- Toggle Airplane Mode. Ten seconds on, then off — forces the phone to search the network again.
- Turn on Data Roaming after landing. Many US travel eSIMs need Data Roaming switched on for the US line once you arrive. Enable it only for the travel line — leave your home line's roaming off.
If nothing works, send your seller your order number, phone model, and OS version — that's the standard information needed to diagnose carrier-side issues.
Three Mistakes to Avoid
- QR codes are single-use. Once the profile is installed, don't delete the eSIM line — you'll need a fresh code from your seller, including when you switch phones.
- Install before you fly. Set it up the day before, somewhere with Wi-Fi, so you're connected the moment you land.
- Keep your lines straight. Home SIM for calls and verification texts, US eSIM for data, and home-line data roaming stays off to avoid surprise bills.
